Dear Sir: I have just learned from my friend Pamela Rogers that there is a plan to reserve a large section of the Poros coastline exclusively for industrial fish farms, and to restrict fishing near them. I greatly enjoyed my recent visit to Poros, and found it an ideal place for a quiet vacation. The coastline is very scenic, and yet there are also excellent tourist facilities. I particularly enjoyed the excellent fresh fish I ate in a waterfront restaurant, whose owner had caught the fish that morning. I cannot understand how this plan for industrial fish farms makes any economic sense. It conflicts with the island's tourism and with its traditional fishing culture. It is true that farmed fish can be sold a little more cheaply than wild-caught fish, but the quality is inferior and many people refuse to eat them. If there must be such fish farms, they should be in locations where they do not conflict with natural beauty and tourism. I urge you as Mayor of Poros to strongly oppose this plan. -- Regards, Alan Quirt, PhD Ottawa, Canada
