I live in the Municipality of Monemvasia, near the town of Neapolis, in close proximity to the Natura 2000 sites GR2540002 (Lake Strongyli), GR2540001 and GR2540007. The establishment of Management Bodies to govern the Natura 2000 sites in Greece is long overdue. However, it must be done according to Nature 2000 requirements which mandate maintaining the integrity of the Natura 2000 network. The plans which I have seen for the proposed Management Bodies destroy the integrity of the Natura 2000 network on the Malea Peninsula in a most distressing manner. They propose including the Natura 2000 areas on the Islands of Kythira and Elafonisos and our Lake Strongyli Natura 2000 with sites in distant Messinia. This proposal shows no understanding or appreciation of the integrity of the network of Natura 2000 sites on the Malea Peninsula. The Lake Strongyli GR2540002 Natura 2000 site is much more closely related to Natura 2000 sites on the Malea Peninsula (GR2540001 and GR2540007), which defines Vatika Bay, than it is to distant coastal sites in Messinia. The Natura 2000 sites in Kythira and Elafonisos are logically part of a Management area that encompasses Vatika Bay and the land of the Malea Peninsula contiguous to Vatika Bay. The Lake Strongyli site is used by migrating birds that fly down the Malea Peninsula to Lake Strongyli and then continue on their path across Vatika Bay to the island of Kythira. In order to maintain the integrity of the network of Natura 2000 sites, it is imperative that all the Natura 2000 sites on the Malea Peninsula, including Natura sites GR2540001 and GR2540007 and Lake Strongyli GR2540002 and Natura 2000 sites on the Islands of Elafonisos and Kythira remain grouped together under one Management Body. The Natura 2000 sites in the far west of the Peloponnese would logically be managed by a body which would maintain the integrity of the Natura 2000 network on the Mani peninsula. The Management Body area which would adhere to the requirements of the requirement to maintain the integrity of the Natura 2000 network is shown below outlined in green. The proposed divisions, shown by red lines, artificially divide the Natura 2000 network into east-west strips that pay no attention to the functioning of the Natura 2000 network. I hope you will take another look at the proposed Management Committees and revise them to comply with the Natura 2000 requirements. The European Union has taken note of Greece’s past failures to abide by Natura 2000 requirements, and this case will certainly be brought to the EU’s attention if the integrity of the Natura 2000 network is ignored.
