Dear Greek colleagues, with big interest I am following the discussion on this forum. Even though the restructuration of the Greek call sign system is an internal process of Your country, the removal of Mount Athos from the prefix list (article no. 13) touches me and probably the whole orthodox world - and here this matter already becomes international. First of all, I am a very passioned and active ham radio operator since 1983. Since then, I really never understood why Greek stations operating from Mount Athos had to use the suffix /A as indicator for their place of operation. The suffix /A is commonly used by hams who are not working from the location where the radio station is permanently registered, but from a second fixed location (e.g. a week-end house). I noticed that in Greece certain regions got their own prefix such as Dodecanes - SV5 or Crete - SV9 etc., but the biggest cultural asset which Greece has, namely the Holy territory of Mount Athos, the centre of the Orthodox world isn't reflected in Your call sign structure at all! Since 5 years I am living in Russia which is mostly orthodox. Look at the map how big is Russia! It is by far bigger than Greece, but for all of the Russian orthodox believers it is clear that their spiritual centre is located in Mount Athos, in YOUR country. Wheras the catholic world is valuating and honouring it's cultural and religious centre by an own state and an own prefix, Vatican - HV, why doesn't Greece do the same? Why doesn't Greece valuate and honour this unique world heritage which was given to Your hands to take administratively care of, by giving Mount Athos at least an own prefix? With Mount Athos Greece has really something to show to the world, and You can be proud of it! I think especially in the tough economic situation of today, You shouldn't hide Your cultural assets just by removing them from the prefix list as if they were not existing, show to the world that Greece has unique treasures! Mount Athos as spiritual centre of the entire orthodox world has deserved it's own regional prefix already a long time ago. Same as the catholic world can celebrate their religious centre with the prefix HV, we orthodox believers want the same! We want our own prefix for our spiritual centre, too! I herewith kindly ask the Greek administration to handle this issue not as an internal subject only and not to forget that the spiritual boundaries of Mount Athos are by far bigger than it's geographic boundaries, reaching from Arctic Russia to Antarctic South Shetlands, where the southernmost orthodox church is located. Please don't forget those who are non-Greek but who are tightly connected with Your country, especially with our religious centre Mount Athos. Assigning an own prefix to Mount Athos would be a great present to all of us! Best regards, Mikhail D. Weiel, RA/DL5EBE - Moscow, Russian Federation
