The loss and theft of animals is already a concern and micro chipping is used by responsible owners. Those that are intent on abandoning animals will abandon them BEFORE this legislation becomes operative. For those who already suffer under financial difficulties because of Greece’s monetary crisis and for animal organisations who have many animals in their care these increased costs will result in heavy and devastating consequences. This proposal MUST be considered by the government before implementation and free concessionary services provided. The emphasis should NOT be mass micro chipping but mass STERILISATION. And total costs for this should fall entirely on the small section of those already showing care and responsibility. This cost should be directed to where it belongs the Greek Government. Considerations for free or nominal prices for micro chipping and sterilisation must precede these proposals to ease the burden on Animal organisations and those people on low incomes. The government must accept full responsibility and contribute to the stray animal situation in Greece which it has systematically ignored and allowed to develop to present crisis proportions.
