Collaborative projects should remain the major form of conducting research in Europe. All sizes of projects and beneficiaries must be properly catered for but the key action is to improve coordination and coherence between projects and the overall policy objectives of a certain support areas. Smaller projects may be more efficient and better foster innovation depending on the circumstances, but they must all fit together with the overall objectives of EU support and the Common Strategic Framework for future EU Research and Innovation Funding - CSFRI as such. In sub-areas, where a number of projects is active, cooperation and coordination should be encouraged. However, there is clearly a need to increase the size of certain programmes and also to allow for more large-scale projects with strong and sustained industry participation. Such projects may be of particular relevance for meeting societal challenges such as the transition to a low-carbon economy.
